Tantalum has excellent ductility and can be easily drawn into fine wires or rolled to extremely thin specifications (such as 0.02mm) while maintaining structural integrity and toughness. The density reaches 16.6 g/cm ³, with high strength, but the annealed hardness is low (close to pure copper), making it easy to form by cold working. The coefficient of thermal expansion is extremely small (0.066/℃), and the dimensional stability is excellent at high temperatures; The melting point is as high as 2996 ℃, suitable for high temperature environments.

Tantalum is prone to absorbing gases such as hydrogen, oxygen, and nitrogen, forming compounds at high temperatures that cause embrittlement (such as becoming brittle after hydrogen absorption, which can be restored by vacuum annealing). It has super strong corrosion resistance and forms a dense tantalum pentoxide (Ta ₂ O ₅) protective film on its surface, which resists corrosion from hydrochloric acid, concentrated nitric acid, aqua regia, and most inorganic acids (except hydrofluoric acid and hot concentrated sulfuric acid); At 175 ℃ in concentrated sulfuric acid, the annual corrosion thickness is only 0.0004mm, and it has good biocompatibility, no rejection to human tissues, and can be implanted into the body for a long time.
