Hafnium powder can directly react with gases such as oxygen and nitrogen at high temperatures. It is soluble in hydrofluoric acid and aqua regia, but insoluble in dilute hydrochloric acid, dilute sulfuric acid, and strong alkaline solutions. As a high-temperature resistant material, hafnium powder is commonly used to manufacture rocket propulsion nozzles and is also an important raw material for X-ray tube cathodes and heat-resistant alloy additives. Hafnium powder can be prepared by magnesium reduction of hafnium tetrachloride, thermal decomposition of hafnium tetraiodide, or electrolysis, with product specifications covering nanometer, micrometer, and ultrafine particles.

The preparation methods of hafnium powder mainly include:
