Hafnium Tube

Hafnium Tube

Hafnium tube is a glossy silver gray transition round tube with a density of 13.31g/cm ³ (20 ℃), a melting point of 2233 ℃ (2506K, 4051 ° F), and a boiling point of 4603 ℃ (4876K, 8317 ° F). The physical properties of hafnium tube include high density, high melting point, and boiling point, which make it perform well in high temperature environments.

Hafnium can be used as the cathode of X-ray tubes, and alloys with tungsten or molybdenum are also used as electrodes for high-voltage discharge tubes. Due to the strong thermal neutron capture ability of hafnium, hafnium tubes are used as neutron absorbers for reactor control rods. By inserting or lifting hafnium control rods into fuel assemblies, the power of the reactor can be adjusted to ensure controllable chain reactions. Its alloy is used to manufacture rocket nozzles and protective layer materials for spacecraft, such as hafnium niobium alloy containing 10% hafnium for lunar rocket nozzles and tantalum tungsten alloy containing 2% hafnium for protective layers for spacecraft. The new type of hafnium oxide is expected to be used for manufacturing smaller electronic devices, photovoltaic manufacturing equipment, and more efficient photovoltaic cells.

The production process of hafnium tubes mainly consists of three steps
● Melting and casting: Using nuclear grade sponge hafnium as raw material, producing hafnium ingots through vacuum electron beam melting furnace to remove metal impurities and gas impurities.
● Plastic processing: Production of pipes and bars through various plastic processing methods such as forging, extrusion, rolling, and drawing. Hot processing can be completed within the dense hexagonal alpha phase region, with strong antioxidant capacity and almost no harmful effects of nitrogen.
● Sleeve extrusion: Low carbon steel is often used as the sleeve material for the preparation of capillary tubes and rod blanks, to prevent high-temperature oxidation and metal adhesion to the mold surface.

Attention should be paid when using hafnium tubes:
● When used for nuclear reactor control rod casing, it is necessary to ensure that the neutron absorption cross-section of the hafnium tube meets the standard (>100 target En), and the installation position accurately matches the core design requirements.
● The pipe interface must be double sealed to prevent leakage of fission products; Regularly check the thickness of the pipe wall and replace it immediately if the loss exceeds 10%.
● Halogen compounds such as uranium hexafluoride (UF ₆) can corrode hafnium pipes, and the transportation of such media requires lining with corrosion-resistant coatings or using zirconium alloy pipes instead.
● When used for transporting semiconductor sputtering targets, the oxygen content in the pipeline system should be<1ppm to prevent hafnium oxidation and the formation of brittle HfO ₂ layer.
● Every month, XRD is used to detect the thickness of the oxide layer on the pipe wall. If the HfO ₂ phase transition exceeds 5 μ m, polishing treatment is required to avoid affecting thermal conductivity.
● Every quarter, penetrant testing is used to investigate micro cracks, with a particular focus on welding areas and bent pipe sections.

Hafnium tubes used for nuclear purposes must comply with the "Regulations on the Export Control of Dual Use Nuclear Products" and are prohibited from being modified or transferred to facilities that are not under safeguard supervision without authorization
